Investment Management

As 401(k) account balances grow, most plan participants begin to feel uncomfortable managing their investments. Rebalancing portfolios, adjusting selections to fit current economic conditions, hedging portfolios, analyzing a fund’s expenses — these can be overwhelming tasks for most investors.

Wellington has created the solution: Professionally Managed Models. Wellington’s Managed Models are professionally managed investment portfolios that are ideal for participants who do not have the time or the inclination to create and manage their retirement plan portfolios, and instead would prefer the option to fully delegate the investment management process to an investment professional.

With the Managed Model approach, participants select one of nine managed model portfolios based on their target retirement timeframe (less than 5 years, 5 to 10 years, or greater than 10 years) and their target risk level (conservative, moderate, or aggressive). Each of the nine model portfolio’s asset allocation is adjusted periodically in response to constantly changing market conditions based on the decision of Wellington Consulting Services, Inc.’s Investment Committe.

Wellington’s Managed Models can help plan sponsors satisfy ERISA’s fiduciary requirements by providing participants with an expanded set of diversified investment options. These actively-managed alternatives can help relieve participants of the need to reallocate investments as they near retirement age.

For the do-it-yourselfers, Wellington offers a Self-Manage feature. This allows individuals to manage their investments using Schwab.com, placing buy/sell orders just as they would in a traditional brokerage or IRA account. Each participant is able to decide on their own if they would like to manage their account themselves, or delegate the responsibility to Wellington by selecting a Managed Model.
